What data we collect
Should I Take My Umbrella? collects no personal data. The only information stored is the city name and geographic coordinates you choose when setting up the extension. This data is stored exclusively in your browser's local storage using the Chrome Storage API and never leaves your device except as described below.
How your location is used
If you choose to use the GPS option, your device's coordinates are used in a single request to api.open-meteo.com to fetch a weather forecast and to nominatim.openstreetmap.org to convert those coordinates into a readable city name. The coordinates are not stored, logged, or shared beyond these one-time requests. If you type a city name manually, that query is sent to geocoding-api.open-meteo.com to find the matching coordinates. No identifying information accompanies any of these requests.
Third-party services
The extension communicates only with the following services:
- Open-Meteo (api.open-meteo.com) โ weather forecast data. Open-source, no API key, no tracking.
- Open-Meteo Geocoding (geocoding-api.open-meteo.com) โ converting city names to coordinates.
- Nominatim / OpenStreetMap (nominatim.openstreetmap.org) โ reverse geocoding GPS coordinates to city names.
None of these services receive personal identifiers. Refer to their respective privacy policies for information on how they handle API requests.
Permissions explained
- geolocation โ Requested optionally when the user clicks "Use my location." Never requested automatically.
- storage โ Used only to persist your chosen city so you don't have to re-enter it each time you open the extension.
Data retention
Your chosen city is stored locally until you clear it manually via the extension or uninstall the extension. We have no access to this data and no ability to delete it remotely because it never reaches our servers.
No advertising or monetisation tracking
The extension contains no advertising. No user data is sold, rented, or shared with advertisers or data brokers. No data is used for profiling, targeting, or any purpose unrelated to displaying a weather forecast.
Children
The extension does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children under the age of 13.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes materially, we will update the date at the top of this page. Continued use of the extension after any changes constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
